What is Retrograde Ejaculation
“Retrograde ejaculation happens when semen flows into the bladder instead of being released through the urethra during orgasm.” With the right Retrograde Ejaculation Ayurvedic Treatment, this condition can be managed effectively to support reproductive health.
Normal ejaculation process
- Emission phase (release)
- Semen (a mixture of sperms from the testis and fluid from seminal vesicles, prostate and bulbo urethral glands) is moved into the urethra.
- The bladder neck closes tightly, which prevents semen from entering the bladder.
2. Expulsion Phase (discharge).
- Contraction of the pelvic muscles and urethra forces semen out through penile urethra.
- The external urethral sphincter and muscles help expel semen.
What happens in retrograde ejaculation:
- The internal urethral sphincter muscles (neck of bladder) do not close properly during orgasm.
- Instead, semen expels outwards and enters backward into the bladder.
- This causes mixing of semen with urine in the bladder.
- After orgasm, patients may notice cloudy urine which is because seminal fluid and sperms are expelled during urination.
- Normal orgasm experience: The feeling of orgasm is normal and unaffected.
Causes of Retrograde Ejaculation:
- Surgical causes:
Prostate surgery, bladder neck surgery, or certain spinal cord surgeries.
2. Medicines:
- Alpha blockers (Tamsolusin) used for prostate enlargement (BPH) or hypertension.
- Antidepressive drugs: Tricyclic (Amitriptyline,Imipramine, Nortriptyline) and SSRI’s (fluoxetine, sertraline, citalopram).
- Antipsychotic drugs:Aripiprazole, Olanzapine, Quetiapine, Asenapine.
3. Some medical conditions:
- Diabetes mellitus (Nerve damage affecting ejaculation).
- Multiple sclerosis ( CNS Autoimmune condition).
- Spinal cord injuries.
- Neuropathy (Peripheral nerves are damaged).
Side effects and complications:
- Male infertility:
- If semen doesn’t come out of the body normally, then natural conception is difficult or nearly impossible.
2. Psychological impact:
- Anxiety and stress due to an unexpected dry orgasm.
- Stress about virility and sexual performance.
3. Urinary changes:
- Cloudy urine immediately after orgasm is due to the presence of semen in the bladder.
How to diagnose?
- Patient history and physical examination.
- Urine analysis: urine sample immediately after orgasm to detect the presence of sperm in urine.
- Semen analysis: Often shows low or absent semen.
Why is fertility affected?
- Because semen doesn’t ejaculate and so natural conception becomes difficult or nearly impossible.
- Sperms present in urine are typically viable but diluted in urine, so special techniques (like sperm retrieval from post ejaculatory urine)are needed for IVF fertility treatment.
Normal v/s Retrograde Ejaculation
Steps | Normal
Ejaculation |
Retrograde
Ejaculation |
Bladder neck action | Closed | Fails to closure |
Semen pathway | Outside from urethra | From urethra to bladder |
Sensation of orgasm | Present | Present |
Semen in urine | Absent | Present |
Effect on fertility | Usually normal
(If all other normal) |
Impaired or failure |
Conclusion
Retrograde ejaculation is a condition in which semen travels backward into the bladder rather than being released through the urethra during orgasm. Although the orgasmic sensation remains normal, men may experience cloudy urine and face infertility issues due to the absence of semen during ejaculation. While the condition does not usually affect overall health, it can cause emotional stress and fertility challenges. Seeking timely care, such as Retrograde Ejaculation Ayurvedic Treatment, can help manage the problem effectively and support natural fertility.
